Ecuador ships more banana internationally than any other country. What it is not is the largest producer — that title belongs to India, which grows a larger total volume but sells the overwhelming majority domestically rather than exporting it. Two products, one origin
KATUNA exports both — and buyers who use the words “banana” and “plantain” interchangeably in English are usually asking about two genuinely different products.
Cavendish is the variety behind almost every yellow banana sold internationally. It wasn't always this way: the previous dominant export variety, Gros Michel, was wiped out commercially by a soil fungus — Fusarium Race 1 — in the mid-20th century. Cavendish replaced it specifically because it resisted that race. Plantain is a distinct product line, not a Cavendish variant — higher starch, lower sugar, sold for cooking rather than eating raw. A soil-borne fungal disease that threatens Cavendish banana globally — first suspected in Ecuador in September 2025, at a single farm in Santa Rosa, El Oro. A 15% US tariff has applied to Ecuadorian exports, including banana, since April 2025. A November 2025 framework-agreement announcement is where the "already removed" story started circulating — it wasn't accurate at the time; the 15% rate stayed in place, and press coverage was still calling it “tentative” as late as February 2026.
